![]() | IN GOOD HANDS Young Raccoons Price: US $ 60 Wednesdays used to mean "flintknapping night" for some local people who have taken up the hobby of making stone tools for experimental archaeology or simply for fun. |
| At one of these regular meetings a gentleman had brought in a bucketful of "energetically snoozing" little raccoon kits. It seems their mother had died and the young ones required rescuing from the walled-up chimney of a distraught home owner. Be advised, Rich- whose hands you can see above holding a pair of raccoons, is a licensed wildlife worker, quite accustomed to dealing with anything dealt out by an ill-humored skunk, a baby squirrel or a nuisance fox. I will tell you that raising wild raccoons is not something most people should do. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME...unless you have unlimited forgiveness and a very good sense of humor. Thanks to Rich I got a look at these fellows at a very young age, and the first thing that struck me was that at this age their muzzles are broad, not pointed, as it is in adults. They were sleeping in the bucket, but were churning around like a washing machine in there, squirming under each other over and over for warmth, emitting low grumbles. They looked like quite a handful, even at that age. |
