HEADIN' FOR COVER Gray Fox, Purple Coneflowers, and Blackberry Price: (Framed) US $ |
| The gray fox is the woodland counterpart to the familiar red fox
of the open country. It is also a decidedly southern animal, and
unlike the red fox it will readily take to climbing trees, a
habit that makes this fox unsuitable for the horseback sport of
fox hunting. It is much smaller than the red and therefore more
likely to become another predator's lunch. I have painted this
one as it heads back to the woods from a jaunt into the open. I
remember the time I found a young gray's body- it had been caught
up in a narrow break in a wire fence, perhaps as it was running
away from some perceived danger or perhaps pursuing a meadow
vole. It must have darted hard and fast through the opening and
became trapped. It seemed to be healthy and otherwise unharmed,
quite a shame to lose such a lovely creature. |
