SHORE PATROL Brown Pelicans Price: US $ 1200 |
| This scene resulted from a trip to nearby Tarpon Springs, Florida, where brown pelicans, great white egrets, and other birds frequently wait for the return of the fishing fleet and any handouts that might be obtained. The brown pelican has different plumage for different seasons, and if you know about their breeding plumage it is possible to tell what time of year a scene featuring these birds is depicting. There are also different populations of brown pelicans, and those living in California differ slightly in appearance from those found along the Gulf Coast. In areas where people do a lot of pole fishing, the brown pelican can be a little too enthusiastic about a fisherman's success, and if the fisherman isn't careful, he or she may end up with a large and powerful pelican on the line. Such a situation involves some careful maneuvering to unhook the offender, because no one wants to leave line dangling from them which could later tangle on a wing or foot and cause them or other birds serious harm. There is another reason to be careful: a large pelican can deliver quite a beating with its immense wings when it is frightened. The most enjoyable aspect of these magnificent birds are their spectacular dives from on high into the sea, and their formation flying. Although they appear clumsy and even comical on land, they are excellent aerobats. |
