IMMIGRANT SON Pheasant and Bobwhites Price: US $ 2100 |
This painting brings to mind a rich and detailed tapestry and is a real pleasure to view in person, so I hope to include some details from the painting on this page in the future. When I worked in Illinois, I would drive to and from work along State Highway 111, which is known as the Great River Road. At one point the road passes alongside Horseshoe Lake State Park, a park where the pheasant had been introduced for the benefit of hunters. It wasn't uncommon to see a cock pheasant in full colors strutting his stuff at the edge of the woods. I know most artists depict the pheasant amid cornstalks in the open fields, reflecting a distinct hunting tradition of which the pheasant has been a colorful centerpiece since hunters grew bored with the native prairie chicken. The popularity of pheasant hunting has resulted in the naturalization of this foreign species throughout many parts of the United States, particularly in midwestern states such as Iowa, and the bird's Asiatic origins are what inspired the title of this painting. While I've enjoyed hunting while growing up, I have never had the opportunity to hunt pheasant, so my experience with the species reflects a different aspect of the ringneck's life. I have depicted the bird here in a hedgerow between fields, where it pauses alongside a small stream under the eye of three native bobwhite quail. |
