What's new for 2006 : After taking care of some private wildlife art commissions it's now time to move on to the old museum biz again... but it's not murals this time- it's mannequins. Yes, I said mannequins. The Studio is engaged in working on a number of life-size prehistoric human figures and artifact reproductions for an exhibit at Russell Cave National Monument in the rugged mountain country near Bridgeport, Alabama, not far from Chattanooga, Tennessee. I've been looking forward to a project like this for a change since it is a break from the more common 2-dimensional work done around here. There's more info to come and pictures, too, so stay tuned!
2005 : The frame shop is now in operation. ANCIENT OHIO COLLABORATIVE PROJECT - SEE THE RESULTS HERE S. A. WALTON STUDIO HAS RELOCATED TO THE HIGHLANDS, A BEAUTIFUL RURAL AREA NEAR ARIPEKA, FLORIDA, ALONG "THE NATURE COAST" Well, the studio is complete and we've survived the 2004 hurricane season with but a few downed trees , so it's high time to begin updating the site again. Sorry for the delay. It's been an interesting year! "ANCIENT OHIO " ART SERIES COMPLETED, MID 2003
S. A. Walton Studio was commissioned to produce the "Ancient Ohio Art Series," a series of
original paintings depicting scenes from six archaeological periods of prehistoric Ohio. This art series is part of a fascinating media project being produced for distribution to Ohio's schools, museums, libraries and public television stations in August of 2004.
The project is a collaborative effort by Voyageur Media Group, Inc., and a number of Ohio archaeological and educational institutions, and I am pleased and humbled to play a small part by producing these paintings which I hope will play a role in sparking a greater interest not just in Ohio's, but in all of America's prehistoric inhabitants.
Along the way I've been privileged to meet some of Ohio's current-day inhabitants, including Voyageur's Tom Law, Ohio Historical Society archaeologists Martha Potter Otto and Brad Lepper, Frank Cowan of F. Cowan & Associates Cultural Resources Consulting, and Elliot Abrams of Ohio University, among others. I would like to thank all of them for the whirlwind tours of mysterious Adena "sacred circles" and moundsites in the Hocking River Valley, impressive hilltop Ft. Ancient high in the state's beautiful beech forests, Stubbs Earthworks, the partially reconstructed Sunwatch site, some lesser known but very curious sites here and there, and of course, the collections of the Ohio Historical Society. And I would like to thank the Wohlgemuth Herchede Foundation, whose gracious support made the art series possible.
This has been such an interesting project that I would like to explore Ohio further and do more artwork relating to these cultures in the near future. I heartily recommend that those of you interested in archaeology take the time to travel to the state and do some exploring, too. |
